The studies of cerebral activity during the Stroop task do not establish whether the anterior cingulate is engaged in specifically suppressing an inappropriate response or in making a response in the face of competing responses. In an event-related fMRI study of cerebral activity during a version of the continuous performance task, in which the participant was required to respond whenever a specified target stimulus was presented, Carter et al (1998) demonstrated that the anterior cingulate was activated not only during trials in which no responses were made, but also during trials in which correct responses were made, under conditions involving strong response competition.

In this book we shall draw upon a variety of methods that between them provide information about the time course, cerebral location and neurotransmitters involved in mental activity. All of these methods have important limitations that must be taken into account when evaluating the evidence. Therefore, it is appropriate to review these various methods briefly at this point. Observations of performance and behaviour Patterns of performance and behaviour under various circumstances provide important clues regarding the nature of underlying neural processes.

A major mechanism by which dopaminergic neurotransmission regulates behaviour is modulation of the cortico-subcortical loops that provide feedback to the frontal cortex. The amount of feedback to the frontal cortex is determined by two major influences: gating by the limbic system, and modulation by monoaminergic neurons, including dopaminergic neurons projecting from the midbrain. To understand the way in which dopamine could contribute to the regulation of behaviour, it is necessary first to examine the way in which the limbic system gates the cortico-subcortical loops.
