The artwork may be precise, but most often is quickly rendered in simple lines and scribble strokes. The handwriting may be the creator's worst scrawl; the ideas often come faster than the pen can move. Here, for the sake of legibility, I have continued to use the same printed journal notes seen in other chapters. The reference journal is meant to be close at hand, ever ready to record the inspirations, ideas, observations and inspiring insights beheld by its keeper. It is usually small enough to fit in a pocket or purse if the record keeper is active, or may be larger and stored at a frequently used location, such as a studio, laboratory, office or work station.

If it's texture, bold value contrasts or delicate details that catch my eye, I use pen and ink to develop, refine and finish the drawing. Some subjects demand color. Consider the brilliant hues of an autumn maple or a morning mist aglow in pastel peach. Neither subject would have the same eye-catching impact if reduced to black, gray and white. I depend on washes of watercolor to add the drama of color to my journal, as the subject dictates. Although journal pages do not stand up to wet-on-wet conditions and heavy-handed scrubbing, lightly layered wash applications work quite nicely and allow the artist to achieve a wide range of effects.
