Okay, so you’ve made your first row of single crochet, and you survived getting your hook into each and every last chain stitch, using whatever means necessary. You’ve passed the test of will, and the crochet gods are now smiling upon you. They’ll see to it that this second row of single crochet (and every row hereafter) is way easier to complete than that first row was. THE TURNING CHAIN (t-ch) In crocheting, you are often called on to do a very special thing at the end of a row, before starting the next row.

The turning chain is like the ladder that gets you there. For single crochet it is only 1 chain stitch high— just a little step stool—so before starting the next row of single crochets, you will make one chain stitch. Now, keeping your hook in that loop, turn your work away from you, counterclockwise, so that all the completed stitches are sitting off to the left, and you’re at the start of a row. ) By the way, when you skipped the first chain from the hook when crocheting into the foundation chain, that skipped chain was actually the turning chain for row 1.

And nowhere is that more evident than in the multitude of ways that people choose to crochet into that first row of chain stitches.
