Because Judaism has always had multiple meanings, no single allencompassing, substantive definition of what it means to be a Jew will be possible. But if the Jewish community-or any sector of it-wishes to lay the foundation for a qualitatively thriving Jewish life in, say, the year 2008, then it must be willing to determine specific behavioral norms and to impose sanctions on Jews who deviate.

Identical with what already is. It creates the space in which something new can occur. So it is "transcending" in the sense that it is also immanent in the experience of everyone and everything else; and that it always pushes "up from down under," beyond what is given and established. It moves through the body .. but is not . reducible to physical mechanics.
