As a result, the narrative traditions found in Islamic literature assume an authentically Islamic form which is as "original" as Jewish or Christian narrative traditions.  As a whole, the sample of Arabic sources represents a broad spectrum of Islamic opinion on the Abraham­Ishmael story.  A greater number of Christian parallels are available and would be noted by a scholar specializing in early Christian narratives, and particularly by a specialist in Syriac texts.  This is also the point at which the characters of Hagar and Ishmael enter the story.
