Part II explores different dimensions of identity management in the four occupational contexts, drawing on issues of space, bodies, professionalism and social categorizations. In Chapter 9 some issues considered above are revisited to explore reflexivity and identity transformation in non-traditional work contexts. In short, identity is central to understanding how individuals make sense of themselves in organizations and how they relate to One an(Other). In particular, how men relate to (resist, reject, dismiss, embrace) what they see as the non-masculine is key to understanding their experiences in a gender-atypical terrain.

From this, greater recognition may be likely when such philanthropy is practised by men. As discussed elsewhere (Simpson, 2007), male nurses in particular have been found to differentiate themselves from women by presenting their emotional labour skills in terms of the gift exchange. Unlike women who were seen as bureaucratic and rulebound, men took pride in and recounted examples of their ability to mobilize resources, to circumvent procedures to satisfy individual wishes or to spend extra time with needy patients despite other demands on their time.

At the same time, men would sometimes escape Otherness within which they were framed, by becoming, from Fournier (2002), ‘not that Other’ but something else. Thus, Australian nurses in particular, when asked why they chose nursing as an occupation, often spoke in an instrumental manner of their desire to have the means and freedom to travel in the context of the worldwide demand for nursing and the portability of nursing skills: I can move on whenever I want . . I don’t have to stay here, I can go anywhere with my qualifications and experience.
